“Chikis Art” Summer Camp

Practice your Spanish Speaking, Reading and Listening Skills through TEATRO and ARTE.

Theatre and art, a fun and playful medium, are excellent tools for developing language. Kids will integrate skills such as creativity, teamwork, confidence, and leadership in an enjoyable, engaging, and unique way!

Under the guidance of two professional Latin artists, children will have indoor and outdoor activities, playing drama games, creating props and costumes, and working towards creating an Impro Show in just one week! This creative journey will culminate in a performance at a local famous Latin festival!

Ages: 6 to 10
Location: Southwood Community Association (11 Sackville Dr SW, Calgary, AB T2W 0W3)

Drop Off 9:45 am – 10:00 am
Camp 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Pick Up 2:00 pm – 2:15 pm

CAMP INSIGHTS:

Lily Sigie and Almendra Vergara will facilitate each class. (Facilitators count with CPR & First Aid Certificate, Police Check and Intervention Record Check)

It is an excellent opportunity to practice your Spanish skills. Classes and show will be in SPANISH.

Closing day will be on an open and public stage—an excellent opportunity to build kids’ confidence!

A maximum of 12 participants to give more personalized attention to each kid.

Theatre and Visual Art skills to build up just one unique Impro Show!

Kids will have half an hour to have lunch (not provided). However, kids will get pizza on Friday the 19th, the final day of our summer camp!

Lily Sigie

Lily Sigie is a Mexican-Canadian performing artist and cultural developer; she holds a BA in Teaching Performing Arts and a Master’s Degree in “Development and Promotion of cultural projects.” She has over 20 years of experience in the performing arts as an actress, arts educator, theatre producer, and arts manager. In 2017, she arrived in Calgary, and by 2018, she co-founded SpanicArts (Hispanic Association of Professional Artists LTD). Since then, she has been part of different cultural projects within the artistic community in Treaty 7. In 2023, she got her first Artist Development Microgrant from Calgary Arts Development to translate her book “Development of Soft Skills through Art: ABACO Case Study,” published in 2014 and translated in 2024. She has just been mentioned as the Artist of June 2024 by ICAI. You can find more about her HERE.

Almendra

Almendra is a Mexican multidisciplinary artist based in Calgary, AB, Canada, with a Bachelor´s degree in Visual Arts. She is a passionate artist who focuses on performing and visual arts and cultural promotion, painting, opera, theatre scenic design and arts education.

She works as a Teacher Assistant at Stagecoach Performing Arts in Calgary and got a grand for making art workshops by Calgary Arts Development 2023-2024

She was an Artist in Residency at Sparrow Artspace in 2023. She performed at the International Puppet Festival and the Suitcase Theatre arcade and collaborated and worked at Fuse33/Nliten for the Chinook Blast project.

In 2022, she became an artist in residence at the International Avenue Arts and Culture Centre Inc. in partnership with Fuse 33, And worked with Gato Negro Spanish theatre in the project Arts in Residence at W.O. Mitchel School.

Since 2018, She has been a member and co-founder of Mictlan Arts and Research, a Mexican performing collective.
